So I watched Disney XD’s treatment of Naruto Shippuden on Wednesday and it was far superior to the treatment given by Cartoon Network for the first series. It turns out Cartoon Network’s edits for the whole of Naruto were garbage compared to the light touch Disney gave the first four episodes of Shippuden.
Disney basically ran up against the boundaries of the TV-PG rating which is quite wide to begin with and actually showed enough attention to many of the issues presented by fans, even leaving in the Japanese OP and ED along with much of the action the new series is known for with minimal editing for excessive blood and some language.
This shows me two things: Cartoon Network are overly sensitive about content and they are merely chasing fleeting windmills at this point with their mediocre CN Real rebrand, which is a miserable failure compared to Disney’s increasingly successful Disney XD rebrand.
Disney is also showing a commitment to fans of the show outside of their prime demographic by easing up on editing, which says a lot for the company that edited the Gargoyles on DVD for fear of upsetting parents, despite the fact that the audience for the DVDs was people in their 20s and 30s that watched the show in its first run.
In short, fuck Cartoon Network in the ass with broken glass. Reality shows can’t save a network with no direction or any clue as to what the audience wants to watch because it costs too much to make cartoons now.
If Disney keeps this up, they may end up earning the respect that was once afforded to Cartoon Network regarding anime broadcasts on TV before they went full retard (they should have never gone full retard.)
