flclfunimation Gainax Announces Own FLCL Blu Ray BoxsetNot long after Funimation announced its own plans to release the fan favorite FLCL on Blu-Ray and a re-release on DVD, Gainax has apparently confirmed its own Blu-Ray version, to be released on May 26th in Japan concurrently with a new DVD release.

Speculation is now running rampant on how Gainax will handle the video footage for the release, as FLCL was a digital production with a fixed resolution of 480p, while others are speculating (expecting) that the studio will upscale the show to 1080i.

In the midst of that, the one variable is Funimation and its Blu-Ray release of the series.

Will the distributor use Gainax’s new masters, or will it do its own upscale work in the vein of Full Metal Panic, Dragon Ball Z and Witchblade? The only people that know that at this point are Funimation and Gainax.
