JSDF sunglasses

The JSDF is commonly depicted in anime and manga as a full standing military ignoring historical context for the sake of the narrative, while the reality of the organization is much more along the lines of a civilian military built within limits defined by the contentious “Article 9″.

Now, what does that have to do with sunglasses, you ask?

The above sunglasses are endorsed by the organization owing to Japan Trend Shop’s claims of stopping a 6.5mm (0.3-inch) diameter object traveling at 106 mph without the lenses shattering. The shop also says the 2mm-thick lenses won’t shatter even if a 500g (1.1-pound) shaft of iron is dropped on them from 4 feet high, but that claim is a little harder to believe.

If you’re up for testing the claims, the sunglasses are available for purchase at a cost of $317.
