Gundam Rock coverSpeaking to L.A. Weekly blog West Coast Sound, musician/performer Andrew W.K. has expressed interest in performing his recent album of Gundam covers Gundam Rock, released in Japan last year at anime conventions in the US.

“If I’m asked, I absolutely would [play a convention]“.

“In my hometown, Ann Arbor, in southeast Michigan, there’s a hotbed of anime enthusiasts there. I would like to think that it’s because of the university, but there’s something special about southeast Michigan that attracts a certain kind of mind and a certain kind of pursuit. I think it’s one of the largest hubs of anime fandom in the U.S.

If I’m mistaken, I pray that it will be, but I think it already is. It’s massive. Someone approached us in Ann Arbor who runs a collectible store, an anime store, and said that this is the largest distributor for Gundam merchandise. I was very happy.

I thought that was a divine sign, even though I wasn’t as familiar with Gundam when I was growing up in Ann Arbor, to have moved away from there and do this project and then find out that people in my hometown are huge, diehard fans. That was a great experience and I hope they like my versions of the songs.”

While nothing has been confirmed, the idea of having a major artist on the level of Andrew W.K. is an enticing proposition for some of the larger conventions. Andrew W.K will be releasing the double album Close Calls with Brick Walls/Mother of Mankind in March and is slated to perform on the latest Warped Tour package this summer

Seeing as the 30th Anniversary of the Gundam franchise is in full swing, Zippo Japan has seen fit to properly commemorate the occasion by doing what it does best: making highly expensive (yet functional) limited-edition lighters.

Image

Since there is already a large collectors market for Zippo lighters (most of whom don’t even smoke), there’s no real need to quantify the purchase as a need, although Zippo lighters are incredibly useful otherwise.

As usual, retail on limited-edition Zippo lighters varies between US$160 to US$200 depending on retailer with no immediate word on availability.

ImageThe Japanese industry site AnimeAnime reports that Bandai’s forthcoming Gundam Unicorn anime adaptation will be the first Gundam property to debut around the world simultaneously when it premieres this Winter season.

This follows up similar proclamations about Bandai-Namco’s intent to take the Gundam franchise global earlier this month during the 30th anniversary celebrations when the company stated that it would take steps to make Gundam available for a global audience by making it available in 10 languages.

Bandai has also taken steps to make some of its current franchises available online such as Code Geass, Tamagotchi, and Gundam OO on YouTube as well as a landmark simulcast of last season’s Kurokami: The Animation via premium cable channel ImaginAsian in the US.
