Since I’m taking a break from GDC today, I figured I would take this time out to get this out of the way: The Nintendo Wii price drop this month is in fact a real, permanent drop.

Retailer circulars are printed a month in advance to setup sales schedules and specific item announcements, with the finalized circulars going out the week before the scheduled sale.

In other words, I’m confirming that the Wii will be sold for $199.99 with the current bundle beginning on September 27th to drive holiday sales. Retail employees get early access to new circulars up to two weeks before the scheduled sale begins in order to prepare the store to maximze profit on each sale item.

Take it from a guy that used to work for many a retailer or not, your call.

Viz Media released a prepared statement regarding its intention to increase prices for certain manga titles yesterday when it was acknowledged that some of its titles would see up to a 20% price increase from current pricing:

“Viz Media made the decision to stay consistent with the pricing in the marketplace for this industry, which, in some cases might be a slight increase from previous years.”

Viz will be increasing the MSRP on Naruto to the former industry standard of $9.99 with other Jump titles following suit, while the rest of the lineup will see an increase of $1-$2 depending on title.

Robert of Robert’s Anime Corner Store provides a detailed analysis of the effect of the price hikes on retailers and the consequences of the increases in the long-term for both retailers and fans.

In related news Del Rey has confirmed that the following titles will have their MSRP increased by $1:

  • Alive 7
  • Nodame Cantabile 16
  • Le Chevalier d’Eon 7
  • Ghost Hunt 10
  • Pumpkin Scissors 5
  • Pastel 14
  • Minima! 4
  • Gacha Gacha: The Next Revolution 10
  • Dragon Eye 8.

Dark Horse will also increase the MSRP on its flagship title Berserk from $13.95 to $14.95 along with other titles seeing similar increases from $1-$2

Sovereign Media, the publisher of the Japanese media culture magazine Otaku USA along with Editor-in-Chief Patrick Macias have confirmed that Otaku USA will no longer pack-in a DVD in every new bi-monthly issue, and will drop the cover price of the magazine from $9.99 to $5.99 for each issue before the December special issue.

The December special issue will then ship out with the bonus DVD at the former $9.99 cover price, with subscription rates also reflecting the change at $19.99 for one year and $39.99 for two years.

Special content codes will be placed within the magazine starting with the February 2009 issue for access to the additional content once relegated to the bi-monthly DVD at the Virtual DVD, such as manga chapters, music, trailers, and episodes from selected shows.

Current subscribers under the old rates will have their current subscriptions extended by half an issue rounded up by remainder of issues (Ex: if one issue remains, two will ship).
